Animal Sculpture Head
Describe: My piece is a bald eagle head from the neck up and is made out of clay. At first I got a ball of clay and made a pot where the back side of the eagle's head would be wider and longer. After that dried, I would start making the eyes and texture around it. After that, I would start adding the feather texture around the bird by making lines with a needle tool. After all the texture was added, I started to make the beak separately by starting with a pinch pot and making it form into a beak. After all the detail is attached to the beak to make it realistic, I attached it to the front part of the eagle's head. After I have finished attaching the beak and head together, I added more lines to give texture and added texture to make the mouth more visible. After it was fired, I glazed the beak yellow, the eyes black, and the rest of the head white.
Analyze: Texture is included in the head of the eagle. I used a needle tool to give a feather texture to the eagle. I made lines that just went all over the head of the eagle instead of actually making clay feathers to attach. The lines make it a little rough and give a nice touch of feathers. There is also a variety of texture on the eagle. I made the beak to have a smooth texture and I had the actual head of the eagle to have a rough texture because an actual eagle does indeed have a smooth beak and rough skin because of the feathers.
Judge: To be honest I was not expecting my eagle to be made like this, I was expecting it to be a lot worse so I find the whole piece successful. But to narrow it down, I think I find the head of the eagle the most successful because I think I used the right tools and right texture to make it seem more realistic and give it a feather feeling to whoever is looking at it. I learned how to give texture, balance, and a lot more details on pieces a little bit bigger than I made in Art 1. I also learned that reference images can help you A LOT!
